Clarification: Kris Wu Interview in Marie Claire (January 2016 Issue) - a mistranslation of the word 乖

It has come to my attention that people are dragging Kris for what he supposedly said in a recent interview but it was a mistranslation so I’d like to clear this up.

The part of the interview in question (from Marie Claire January 2016 interview):

My translation:

What type of girls do you like?
Just like an angel, very kind, very good, very filial.

I understand that the original translation was written as “very obedient” instead of “very good” for 很乖.

To explain how this translation came about, I need to talk a bit about the term “乖” (guāi) because it is actually a very hard word to properly translate into English. There isn’t really an English word that embodies everything the word 乖 means. When using it to describe children, it can indeed mean “obedient” so it’s understandable how it was translated this way, however he is obviously not talking about children.

乖 (guāi) is a term that describes someone who is well behaved, kind, and just a good person in general. What Kris meant when using this term along with “like an angel,” “very kind,” “very filial” is obviously to say a good person - not someone who listens to him. Even when you put the word 乖 through google translate or any other dictionary, you will see that the definitions are: good, well behaved, clever, etc.

So stop causing a fuss and bashing him when it was a misunderstanding and he never said such thing.
